Can You Still Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for Free in 2026?

If you are still managing machines running the legendary Windows 7 or 8.1, you probably know that Microsoft officially ended the free upgrade path in late 2023.

However, the most frequent question I get here at Utilidadenices is:

Is there still a way to migrate without buying a new license?

The short answer is: officially, no for new activations. But the technical process still exists for specific scenarios. Let’s break down what works in 2026.

What Changed in 2023/2024?

In September 2023, Microsoft blocked the installation path that allowed users to activate Windows 10 or 11 using old Windows 7 or 8 product keys.

This means if you perform a clean install on a PC that has never seen Windows 10 before, your old key will likely be rejected.

However, if your hardware already has a “Digital License” linked to it (meaning you upgraded this specific PC in the past), you can reinstall Windows 10 as many times as you want, and it will activate automatically via the internet.

How to Attempt the In-Place Upgrade

If you want to try migrating while keeping your files, the official method using the Media Creation Tool is still your best bet:

  1. Go to the official Windows 10 Download page.
  2. Click “Download tool now” (Media Creation Tool).
  3. Run the file and accept the license terms.
  4. Select the option “Upgrade this PC now”.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the process to complete.

💡 Admin Tip: If the tool fails with error 0x80072f8f, it’s usually a TLS protocol issue on Windows 7. Check out my guide on how to fix this connection error.

Edition Rules: Home or Pro?

The conversion rules haven’t changed. Here is which version of Windows 10 you will receive based on your current OS:

If your current Windows is: You will get:
Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Win 8/8.1 Standard Windows 10 Home
Professional, Ultimate, Win 8/8.1 Pro Windows 10 Pro

Clean Install with an Old Key: Does it still work?

As mentioned, Microsoft has tightened the screws on new activations. If you try a clean install and enter a Windows 7 key, the system will likely refuse it.

The technical recommendation in 2026 is to perform an in-place upgrade first to attempt validating the digital license before trying a clean wipe.
